Quality mathematics instruction is imperative if we are to promote and provide appropriate mathematics experiences for each and every student. Attending to issues related to standards, effective teaching practices, social justice and equity, and student identity is imperative.

Participants will be actively engaged in activities to promote understanding and critical conversations about social justice as it pertains to the effective teaching and learning of mathematics. They will examine policies, practices, views, language and instruction in mathematics education.

Participants will experience a lesson designed to give access to all students, discuss the characteristics of the lesson with “a low floor and a high ceiling”, and will then experience lesson planning to ensure that all students have access to new learning.

Finally, participants will set goals and determine steps they will take to ensure that their classrooms are socially just and that all their students have an opportunity and support to learn rigorous mathematics.

Aligning Beliefs and Actions in Equitable Math Instruction

Most educators will confirm that equitable math instruction is a priority, yet inequitable practices in classrooms, schools, and districts persist. This talk will explore activities and resources that can help math leaders shine the light on disconnections between teachers’ beliefs and actions, and support teachers in better alignment of these as they work toward equitable instructional practices.
